When you think of the Bay
Area, you naturally think of San Francisco, but the
Bay Area is so much more. Within an hour’s drive
of San Francisco you can experience scenic beaches,
majestic redwood forests, quaint waterfront villages,
unique and fashionable shopping
districts, beautiful mountaintop vistas, popular amusement
parks, vast stretches of city,
regional and national parklands, Silicon Valley (birthplace
of the high-tech industry) and the booming metropolises
of Oakland to the east and San Jose to the south.
If you’d like to get to know the Bay Area better,
some possible local tour destinations
include…
Marin County Tour – This is one
of our favorite Bay Area tours, and includes stops above
the Golden Gate Bridge with postcard views of the bridge
and San Francisco’s waterfront,
visits to Muir Woods (and its towering redwoods), Sausalito
(a Mediterranean-style
community with wonderful bayside views, shops and restaurants),
Tiburon (a charming town resembling an authentic New
England seaport village), Mission San Rafael Arcangel
(the
2nd-to-last of California’s 21 missions that were
built), Mt. Tamalpias (with sweeping views of
The Bay on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the other),
and a drive out to the coast through
quaint rural communities and scenic farmlands.
East Bay Tour – The East Bay
includes the large bayside cities of Oakland and Berkeley
as
well as the more rural communities on the other side
of the East Bay hills. Sights to see in
your East Bay tour include, the University of California
at Berkeley campus, Oakland’s
famous Lake Merrit, the Jack London Waterfront, Tilden
Park, and the Chabot Space Center.
Peninsula Tour – The Peninsula
stretches from San Francisco in the north down to Silicon
Valley in the south. In between there are numerous sights
to see including, the historic El
Camino Real (once the trail followed by the Spanish
friars in establishing the California
Mission system, but now a bustling, major thoroughfare),
the beautiful San Mateo coastline including the beach
towns of Half Moon Bay and Pacifica), Stanford University
as well as numerous museums, parks and public gardens.
Parks Tour – The Bay Area boasts
some of the most plentiful and scenic metropolitan
parklands in the country. From Muir Woods National Monument
to the north, to the beautiful
East Bay Regional Park system, to rustic and scenic
State Parks on Mt. Tamalpias, Mt. Diablo,
and Big Basin, and finally to the vast Golden Gate National
Recreation Area (the jewel of the bay’s parks)
that stretches out from both sides of the Golden Gate.
Circle-the-Bay Tour – This unique
tour takes you north over the Golden Gate Bridge into
beautiful and seemingly evergreen Marin County, up over
the top of The Bay at the doorstep
of the Napa Valley, back down the East Bay shoreline
past Berkeley and Oakland (with
postcard views of San Francisco), then curving around
the bottom of The Bay through San
Jose (the fastest growing major city in the US) and
back up the bustling Peninsula into San Francisco.
